*affiliate disclosure: some of the links on this page are affiliate links. Which means I make a small commission on each sale. This is the bread and butter for most bloggers, and I’m no different. You’ll likely add affiliate marketing programs to your own blogs. It’s a wonderful option for making money with blogs because you get to promote what you believe in and make a few bucks doing it.
Starting a blog is easier than it sounds. Really, I pinky swear.
Let’s break this down in easy steps, shall we? No sense in over-complicating it. And trust me, it can over-complicated!
Friend, take a deep breath when going through this list. Take it chunk by chunk. And write down your questions for me. Because, for reals, I’m just an email away. I promise I’ll get back with you as soon as possible, and if I have an answer, you betcha I’ll share with ya.
Blogging Check – List
Pick a niche – decide what you’re passionate about, what you’re knowledgeable in, and what you can see yourself writing quality content on for years on end. Blogging is a lot of writing. A lot of coming up with new, fresh, interesting content. If you think one certain niche would make you a load of money, but you have no passion for it, and don’t know much about it, it probably isn’t going to give you long term success. Pick what you know, what you love, and what there’s a market for and go for it!
Grab a domain name – okay, y’all this is not going to be easy. Most of the domain names I searched for were, of course, taken. And what’s worse? Many were up for auction for thousands of dollars. Essentially, being helf hostage. What a bummer! Well, here’s the thing – you will find a domain name that you love. You will just need to dig, dig, dig. Be creative, think outside the box.
Couple of domain tips: think small. The smaller the better. My domain name breaks this rule. But in general, you want to stick with a couple-three words in the name. Stick with a .com. Almost no one is going to be observant enough to notice, let alone remember, that you have a .net or .org.
You can search available domain names here.
Grab some hosting – there are so many options available for hosting a blog. You could go to Google.com and look up web hosting companies. Then, judge them all against each other. That can get a little crazy, with all the hosting companies out there, but is an option.
Wanna know who I recommend? BlueHost is a great option for moms starting their own blog. You can host a website for as little as $3.95 a month – which is crazy affordable.
Blue Host Features:
- One click WordPress installation
- 27/7 support – which is super important, because, inevitably you will run into a glitch here or there that you need help with.
- 30 day money back guarantee
Starting out, I would say the $3.95 hosting option should work just fine. Then, as your blog grows, you can upgrade as needed.
Joined BlueHost and overwhelmed? Please be sure to utilize their support desk… that is why they’re there. Don’t be afraid to email them, say, HELP I am new to this and have no idea what to do next… and trust me, they will help you every step of the way. Once you get the hang of hosting cpanels (where you find all the goodies that come with hosting), they are much easier to work with.
Pick a theme for your blog – pick a what? Ha! This might be like a foreign language to you, if you’re brand new to blogging. Basically, a theme is the look of your blog. It’s the design.
I recommend using Genesis as your framework (the bones of your WordPress website) and then buying a “child” theme to go with the Genesis framework. I know, I know, this might be getting a little confusing and for that, I’m sorry. I’m trying to think of the best ways to word this, but feel I should call everything by their names, as you’ll run into these terms a lot in blogging.
Read more about the Genesis Framework.
I recommend Restored 316 Designs for beautiful child themes for WordPress. (I personally use their Cultivate theme)
If you purchase a blog theme from Restored 316 Designs, and need some help putting it together, I offer Blog Set Up Services that I keep at an affordable rate.
That’s it! See, not so hard. Okay, so maybe that isn’t everything but that is all you need to know to get started.
